Stimulating creative talents of District residents is a compelling feature of this year’s summer programming. Participate in the various cultural arts, crafts, performing, music and visual arts this summer.

DC Youth Orchestra
Camps: June 20 – July 4, 2011
Scholarships available for DC residents. 75% or 100% discount and a free t-shirt.

Classes: July 11 – July 29, 2011
Financial aid is available for all those who qualify based on household size and income

 

The Petworth Jazz Project, May 21 – September 10, FREE

Artful Conversation Summer Series, July 17- August 10, FREE
National Gallery of Art, West Building Main Floor, Rotunda
Designed for children (ages 8-11) and adults to participate in together, this series of programs uses observation and discussion to explore works of art in the collection. Led by museum educators, each program includes looking at one work of art in the galleries, accompanied by a sketching activity.

Each week participants will create drawings inspired by the painting they investigate. Each participant will receive a sketching booklet to accompany this series and a stamp for each program attended. If you have three or more stamps at the end of the summer, you will receive a prize! National Building Museum, First Tuesday of each month, FREE
Book of the Month Literacy Program
Each month, this series features a new book with activities that your family can explore together at the Museum and at home.
At 10:30 and 11:30 am on the first Tuesday of each month, the Museum will introduce a new book during a read-aloud in the Building Zone’s Book Nook. The books explore themes such as patterns, city planning, construction, and celebration of other cultures. Families will then be invited to participate in corresponding hands-on play activities in the Building Zone. The Book of the Month program is free and recommended for ages 3 to 5.

KanKouran West African Dance Company
KanKouran offers classes for children, teens and adults in the authentic dance and drumming styles of select West African cultural groups. An aerobic activity, dance classes include a warm-up and breakdown of dance steps, followed by choreographed routines. Drum classes teach polyrhythmic concepts of African drumming and choreographed orchestral techniques to accompany the dance movements. Fees: $12 for adults; $5 for children's classes.

Art All Night: Nuit Blanche, September 24th, 7pm- 3 am, FREE

Marcātus: Creative Art Market, April 3- August 7, FREE
The Yards Park from 11 am- 6 pm

Marcātus, a creative market happening on the first Sunday of every month near the Nationals Ballpark, is a multidimensional event different than any other to reach the District. Marcātus invites you to come out for the whole day to enjoy the sounds of live music, smells of exotic foods, eye candy of art, to hunt for creative treasures, and relax on the Great Lawn with a frosty beverage taking in the picturesque views of the Anacostia River.
