- Parents: Keep your child reading over the summer. Sign up for Summer Reading. Studies show that children can begin the school year behind if they don’t read over the summer. Have FUN reading this summer with the DC Public Library’s Summer Reading program.
- For Children: DC Public Library celebrates summer reading for children with "One World, Many Stories" for children ages birth - 12. Sign up begins on June 1. Check our calendar for a schedule of events at your neighborhood library.
- For Teens
DC Public Library celebrates summer reading for teens with "You Are Here," for teens ages 12 - 19. Sign up online now! Start winning prizes after reading two books. The more you read, the more you win. Enter the Book Review Contest and you could win a laptop.

Learning can take place anywhere, any time. Here are a few key things you can do to stay sharp this summer.
- Do 20-30 minutes of reading every day!
- Keep your math skills sharp with flash cards or create a chart to track daily temperatures and determine how much it varies from day to day.
- Stay active! Exercise the body as well as the brain by adding fitness and nutrition into your daily routine.
- List a few things you’re interested in and plan family field trips based on your interests.
- Take advantage of the wealth of cultural activities, concerts, plays, museums and galleries in the District of Columbia.

LEAP Summer Enrichment Program
The Learning through Experience, Application and Participation (LEAP) Summer Enrichment Program gives DC, Virginia, and Maryland youth ages 8-12 an opportunity to learn about DC through experiencing it first hand, applying their learned knowledge and participating in cultural exchanges. The program includes field trips to many of DC's prominent cultural attractions, recreational activities and more!
Summer 2011 program dates are July 5-29, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm (childcare available before and after for an additional fee). Each week will have a different thematic emphasis and you can register your youth on a weekly basis:
- Week 1 (July 5-8): Citizenship
- Week 2 (July 11-15): Health & Wellness
- Week 3 (July 18-22): World Cultures
- Week 4 (July 25-29): Creation Care
Applications are due June 27, 2011. Registration will be $85 per week, per youth. Registration fee includes a daily snack, field trips, travel costs, activities and a journal. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch daily. Space is limited so apply today and your youth can LEAP into a world of possibilities.
