Capital Improvement Program
Location 300 Van Buren Street, NW, Washington, DC (3rd and Van Buren Streets, NW)
Planned Use The current public multi-use facility will be replaced by a larger facility.
General Description The facility, built in 1935, currently offers a swimming pool, lighted basketball courts, a football field, a small mutli-purpose room, a tennis court, a softball field, a playground and a lighted tennis court. It has the largest field capacity of any recreation center in DC. The Center services two elementary schools, one junior high school, and one high school. The existing facility is 38,000 square feet.
Building Improvements The original bathhouse will be renovated into a large meeting room, a computer room, a classroom, storage space, and restrooms. The new building will be behind the existing building and will house an Olympic size pool, a weight room, an aerobic room, meeting rooms, a concession area, locker rooms and other public amenities.
Site Improvements The site consists of recreational space, landscaping and parking lots. There will also be a courtyard between the existing and new buildings.
