Teen Programs - Youth Council
The Office of Teen Programs created Youth Councils to improve service delivery and forge new partnerships between the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and District teenagers. The DPR Youth Council works to improve communication between teens and DPR, service delivery, and provide teens with the opportunity to provide input for redesigning recreational services and programs.
DPR's Youth Council also mirrors the structure of the Council of the District of Columbia, providing an additional opportunity for teens to learn more about politics and the electoral and legislative process.
The Youth Council has youth elected that serve on three levels:
- Site Council - Active at a specific DPR site or facility, the Site Council is responsible for on-site coordination and interaction with the site manager and other community representatives
- Ward Council - Active throughout the Ward, the Ward Council coordinates and interacts with the DPR Ward Manager and all DPR facilities within the Ward. The Ward Council has one representative from each Site Council.
- Director’s Youth Advisory Council - Active throughout the District, the Director's Youth Advisory Council coordinates and interacts with the Director of DPR, ensuring that the needs, interests, and opinions of District teens are incorporated into DPR's programs. The Director's Youth Advisory Council has one representative from each Ward and 3 At-Large representatives from across the District.
