The Play DC Master Plan for the District of Columbia's Parks and Recreation System
Play DC is an ambitious, long-range vision to transform the District's parks and recreation system into one of the best systems in the nation. It is the first comprehensive plan of its kind in the District, and its reach is truly citywide.
The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) partnered with the DC Office of Planning (OP) and over 25 stakeholder organizations between 2013-2014 to develop this new, bold, and strategic vision for advancing the District's parks and recreation resources. Thousands of District residents provided their insights into their recreational needs and interests, and a Vision was created to develop an equitable system.
As a master plan, this framework cannot prescribe exactly how large to make every new recreation center or park, or which programs to offer at a particular site ten years from now. This framework does establish important expectations, however; when implemented, this plan should result in a parks and recreation system that features a variety of facilities located within a reasonable distance of each resident, and designed to provide a range of programs in spaces flexible enough to change as residents' needs and interests change.
Play DC charts a course ahead, steeped in the belief that great park systems make great cities. The documents below evaluate the system, define community priorities, and provide a compass for making strategic and equitable investments in the years to come.
