Concept Design

Per the December 3 community meeting, as well as comments received in the online survey about the two Sherwood concept designs ("Mound" and "Bench;" both concepts are available for download below), a final concept design was developed and presented on December 17 that is based on the Mound design.

The Mound builds on a theme of including multiple play areas filled with equipment that can be used in multiple ways or by multiple children at the same time. Coming from 10th Street, the playground can be accessed via a new "meadow walk" that incorporates the existing trees and creates a natural play space that also includes interactive elements such as a "human sundial" and musical equipment. The playground can also be accessed from the track and a new walkway from the school.

Both concepts feature custom, iconic pieces that challenge children of all ages, as well as inclusive pieces designed for all ages and abilities.

The presentation delivered at the December 17 meeting and the concept shown that evening are available for download below. A revised concept per community feedback is also available below, dated 2-3-14.

Pardon Our Dust!

During construction, you can anticipate the following impacts:

  • The parking lot at Sherwood Recreation Center will be offline.
  • The parking lot at School-Within-School will be offline during the first phase of the project.
  • The basketball court at Sherwood Recreation Center will be offline.
  • Access to the walking loop/field will be open, with the exception of several weeks in June/July, when an extension to the water line will be installed to provide for water fountains in the new playground.
  • The Recreation Center will remain open through the duration of construction.
