DPR Celebrates Earth Day-Week-Month

Green Community Events to be Held Across City April 18-26

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The DC Department of Parks and Recreation celebrates Earth Day, Week and Month with a series of Green Community Programs to be held from April 18 to April 26 across the District of Columbia.

Following is the schedule of events:

4/18/15  Annual Beautification Day - a collaboration between the Edgewood Civic Association, The Boston Academy and the ANC who will supply plants and mulch -- Boston Academy-Edgewood Recreation Center: Third and Evarts Street, NE | 20017;  11 am-2 pm.

4/18/15  Earth Day Beautification event, friends and volunteers will weed existing flower beds and freshen up flowers -- Friends of Park View - Park View Recreation Center: Park View Recreation Center: 693 Otis Place, NW, DC;  10 am – 1 pm.

4/18/15   Ward 5 Community Cleanup - Raymond Recreation Center, 915 Spring Rd. NW-- Office of the Mayor/Community Relations and Services.

4/20/15    Liberty’s Promise -- Trash Cleanup of Upshur Park  3:45-4:45 pm

The purpose of this project is to engage the Roosevelt High School participants of the Liberty’s Promise after-school program for immigrant youth, Civics and Citizenship, in a service project at Upshur Park, within their community.

4/21/15    DPR will exhibit at EPA’s Earth Day celebration at Federal Triangle’s William J. Clinton Building, 12th and Constitution  – Josh Singer, DPR Community Garden Specialist, will give a presentation on Urban/Community Gardening and Pollinators. 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.

4/23/15    DPR-HQ Earth Week project: Recycling Education Program - Xavier Brown, DPR Small Parks Specialist, will host internal workshops on recycling in the workplace.

Earth Month Habitat Gardens (Community Planting days April 18 -26 at each of the 8 Wards)

Park Partners in each Ward will be supplied with a selection of native, perennial plants and mulch sufficient to plant a garden (or to supplement an existing garden bed) approximately 6’ x 10’. The plants have been specially selected to attract and support hummingbirds, butterflies (including Monarchs), bees and other creatures that are important players in a healthy ecosystem.

Ward 2- Friends of the 10th Street Park at the 10th Street Park
Ward 3- Friends of Guy Mason at Guy Mason Recreation Center
Ward 4- Friends of Takoma at Takoma Recreation Center
Ward 5- Friends of Noyes Park at Noyes Park
Ward 6- Friends of Lansburgh-Lansburgh Community Garden
Ward 7- Washington Parks & People- Marvin Gaye Park
Ward 8- Eagles Nest Youth Assn. at Bald Eagle Recreation Center

Did you know the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) provides quality urban recreation and leisure services for residents and visitors to the District of Columbia? DPR currently operates 92 playgrounds, 70 recreation centers, almost 1,000 acres of park land, 40 aquatic features (pools and spray parks), 375 parks, over 200 play courts (basketball and tennis), and more than 100 athletic fields.
