(Washington, DC) - The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is excited to offer International Lifeguard Training courses for Summer 2017. Courses will be offered through May 2017.

DPR employs certified International Lifeguard Training Program lifeguards year round in order to serve District residents and guests at DPR Aquatic Facilities. The International Lifeguard Training Program (ILTP) is a single, integrated curriculum that successfully trains lifeguards and lifeguard instructors through proven training methods and state-of-the-art lifeguard rescue skills. DPR is offering an incentive and will waive registration fees for any class that starts on or before Wednesday, March 1, 2017.

The ILTP is an objective driven program that produces lifeguards that perform at a higher level than those of other national/international training agencies. It is a unique, comprehensive lifeguard training program; the content includes Health Care Provider level CPR (one and two person CPR, AR, Foreign Body Airway Obstruction, and AED training), Emergency Oxygen Administration training, and First Aid, along with state-of–the-art rescue techniques. The comprehensive nature of the program allows for a complete training curriculum that prepares the lifeguard with one, single course, the continuity of which produces competence and confidence. Lifeguard candidates must successfully pass written and practical (“hands-on”) tests in order to receive an ILTP Course Completion Certificate that can be used to gain employment at any aquatic facility in the world. Adequate instruction time is provided for students to meet the training objectives and achieve “test ready” competency.

All candidates must pass the prerequisites screening on the first day of class which includes the following:

* 100 yard swim (continuos using an approach stroke, freestyle or breaststroke)
* Retrieve a 10 pound dive brick from the deepest part of the training facility
* Tread water without the use of your hards for 1 minute
* Exit the pool unassisted and without the use of steps or a ladder

DPR offers ILTP courses between December and June at multiple facilities across the District. Candidates must successfully pass the written exam with a minimum score of 80%, demonstrate skill competency to the instructor during practical scenarios, attend all scheduled class sessions and maintain a professional attitude at all times.

All lifeguards employed at DPR must maintain a valid ILTP certification. Lifeguards are expected to maintain their skills at a “test-ready” level at all times and are subject to unannounced aquatic safety audits. Please note that DPR lifeguards are in a “safety-sensitive” position and are subject to suitability screening. Passing the ILTP course DOES NOT guarantee employment with DPR.
-Participants MUST attend ALL training dates-

****THIS CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED FOR EMPLOYMENT AT DPR AS A LIFEGUARD****
