Playground Design Theme Based on Mathematical Sequence Found in Nature

WHAT/WHO: Mayor Vincent C. Gray; Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie; Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Interim Director Sharia Shanklin; Department of General Services (DGS) Director Brian Hanlon; the family of Harry Thomas, Sr. and ANC 5E04 Commissioner Sylvia Pinkney will join Eckington community members for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated Harry Thomas Sr. Playground.

BACKGROUND:

The design inspiration and theme for this play space is based on the Fibonacci sequence – a series of numbers in which each figure represents the sum of the previous two numbers (i.e., 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34, etc.). The sequence is represented in many ways in nature – such as certain mollusk shells and the spirals found in fiddlehead ferns.

New features at Harry Thomas Sr. playground include: new, curvilinear, ADA-accessible walking paths; a community garden; a fitness loop; new playground surfacing; rain gardens and bio-retention areas; new basketball courts; new custom playground equipment; outdoor adult fitness equipment; a shaded picnic area and more. Harry Thomas Sr. playground is one of the 32 play spaces being built or renovated under Mayor Gray’s Play DC: Playground Improvement Initiative.
