The first part of this class will be a tour of ECO City Farms' Edmonston Urban Farm. On this sub-acre plot, we will experience space-saving techniques, season-extension technologies, various compost systems, and other methods for utilizing the space intensively to serve the Farm's 20+ member year-round CSA and farmers' market.
The second part of this class will be on the most appropriate form of composting in urban environments: Bokashi and Vermicomposting. Bokashi is container-composting, using fermentation to prepare our compostables for the second stage of the process: composting with worms (vermicomposting). Although not necessary once Bokashi is ready, Vermicomposting enhances to Bokashi compost to provide some of the richest compost in the world: worm castings. And it can all be done without fear of vermin, odors, heavy labor, and space!
