James Washington serves as the agency's Deputy Director of Administrative Services. He is a passionate leader with a focus on organizational design, human capital management, and systems analysis.
Since 2011, he has served in several roles at DPR including Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief of Aquatics. In these roles, James oversaw a diverse portfolio of DPR facilities and human capital initiatives. His strategic approach involved implementing adaptive management and human capital strategies, conducting organizational assessments, and driving process improvements for agency performance and guest satisfaction. He continues to play a pivotal role in streamlining processes, operating procedures, and implementing strategic initiatives to address complex challenges within the department.
He is a proud Detroit, Michigan native and now District resident. James enjoys mentoring and coaching youth athletes in the sport of competitive swimming by volunteering at DPR also. He holds a bachelor’s degree in health sciences from Howard University. James is a credentialed leadership coach through the George Washington’s Center for Excellence in Public Leadership. His commitment to public service, coupled with a diverse skill set and commitment to professional development, positioned him to be a dedicated leader continuing to contribute and support DPR’s overall mission of promoting health, wellness, and universal access to parks and recreation services at DPR.
