Park(ing) Day is an annual, open-source, worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into temporary public "parks". The mission of Park(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space.
DPR will celebrate Park(ing) Day 2014 with an array of activities. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy a day of activities that will include:
Come and enjoy a day of relaxation and leisure! We invite all the seniors in our community to gather for a day of stress management, promoting self-esteem and confidence. Activities will be introduced to help you relax and extend longevity.
All DPR facilities will be closed on Thursday, September 25, 2014, for DPR's Annual All Staff Development Conference.
All recreation and community centers, all aquatics facilities and all DPR administrative offices will be closed.
DPR will use this day to convene all the agency's employees to review the level of service DPR provides to DC residents and visitors; and to set goals to ensure that residents continue to receive high quality service at all DPR centers, parks and DPR-sponsored events and activities.
Are you ready to explore your musical side? In this class, we will learn the important role that music can play to engage neighbors and make them feel welcome in a garden setting. By drawing from local examples of gardens that incorporate music into their spaces, you will leave with all the tools (and excitement) to create your own music corner. This class will be hands-on, so come ready to exercise those creative muscles!
Agroforestry is the intentional intercropping of perennial plants (such as trees and shrubs) with annual food crops and/or animals. Agroforestry is based on principles that have been traditionally practiced since the dawn of agriculture and are still widely practiced by smallholder farmers around the world. This class will cover the traditional applications of agroforestry as well as how these principles are being scientifically augmented and their application potential around the DC region.

Learn a unique "low-tech" way to maximize your urban growing space with one of the simplest and most unique growing methods in the world.
Most people see the fall as a time to wind down the season and put the garden to rest. However, at ECO City Farms and other 4-season farms, we are just starting a new season. This class will discuss essential principles of the winter harvest, one of which is appropriate technology. We will construct one form of appropriate technology geared to the small, beginning urban grower: the low tunnel.
Growing your own shiitake mushrooms is a delicious way to make use of your shady spaces. Shiitakes also boost your immune system and are a key component of growing a well-balanced diet yourself. If you’re growing for market, shiitakes are a low maintenance specialty item that is well worth the effort. At this workshop, participants will learn how to plug logs and successfully grow their own shiitakes.
