Now that you've grown it, how will you eat it? This class will explore fun and delicious ways to make healthy, nutritious, affordable and filling recipes using your garden's bounty. Whether you ended up with a hill of beans, a cartload of cukes, or a bushel of basil you will come away from this class with fresh ideas on how to prepare and eat and preserve your harvest.
In this session learn with members of Ecohermanas and the Seed Keeper Collective to engage holistically in the process of saving seeds from plants. Explore the stories within seeds and the value of the indigenous, cultural and historical narratives of seeds. We will have an opportunity to experiment hands-on with seed saving techniques from fruits, vegetables and herbs of various sizes. The session will include how to log, store and preserve seeds for use in your garden and how to plant for seed saving too. All supplies provided but please bring seeds to swap.
Come tour a 10-acre forest garden and see forest garden plants and techniques for the DC region. Then help build a “lasagna garden” bed—prepare a fertile and weed-free growing environment with no digging involved.
Participants will learn different methods of food preservation - pickling, drying, freezing, and canning. This workshop will explain which method is best to use for your needs and for each harvest and will walk through the basics of each method. Join us at the Food Preservation workshop to learn how to preserve your harvest and enjoy delicious fruits and vegetables all year long.
Learn basic skills for using both hand and power tools. In addition, we will discuss how to design and build basic garden installations (trellises, raised beds, etc.). The class will culminate in a collaborative brainstorming session on ways to source and upcycle “waste” (wood, bamboo, etc.) from around the city from construction sites, municipal sources, and neighbors.

The first part of this class will be a tour of ECO City Farms' Edmonston Urban Farm. On this sub-acre plot, we will experience space-saving techniques, season-extension technologies, various compost systems, and other methods for utilizing the space intensively to serve the Farm's 20+ member year-round CSA and farmers' market.
Mayor Vincent C. Gray kicked off the 2014 season of MuralsDC with a splash on Thursday, July 31, at the William Rumsey Aquatic Facility at 635 North Carolina Avenue, SE. The event featured a carnival-like atmosphere, made possible by Cirque du Soleil, which included acrobatic acts by the TSNY DC trapeze school, face painting, animal balloons, cotton candy, snow cones and music. More than 100 local children and adults attended the event to celebrate a new mural at the facility.
