2016 "Earth Month" Events Series

Earth Month Series at DPR!!

DPR is proud to present our first ever Earth Month Series!  Thank you to all of our participating organizations for helping us pull together an amazing selection of workshops and park clean up's throughout the District.

All events are free and registration is not required.  We ask participants please come on time to the workshop series' and be sure to use hashtag #BeGreen16.  Lastly, don't be shy about sharing your photos, comments, etc on our social media platforms (@DCDPR on Twitter, FB, IG, Periscope and SnapChat), we have even tagged participating organization on our platforms in case you want to learn more.

Getting Your Garden Ready for Spring Workshop
Presenter: Kathy Jentz from Washington Gardener Magazine
Description: Beginner gardeners are often overwhelmed by the long spring to-do lists of garden tasks. The presentation will cover what chores are essential and which can you safely skip, cost-saving tips and tricks and best plants for our region and how to give them a successful start on life!

Park Clean Up
Facilitated by: Old Takoma Business Association & Takoma Volunteers
Description: Come get your hands dirty and help us restore this native plant garden! Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, tools will be provided.

WORMS! Worm Composting Workshop
Presenter: Willa Pohlman from City Blossoms
Description: Worms are some of the most important creatures in the garden and since they are hidden underground, they can be easy to forget. Worms are the recyclers of the earth and work to turn old food and plants into new healthy soil. Come learn about all the hard working, wiggly creatures underneath our feet and explore worm composting for the afternoon with City Blossoms.

Description: Join us to learn about how storm water run off effects the health of our local streams and rivers by participating in a hands on water quality testing workshop and learning what YOU can do to keep our streams and rivers healthy and clean!

Extreme Clean Up (Park Clean Up)
Facilitated by: Rock Creek Conservancy & West End Dogs
Description: Join Rock Creek Conservancy for our 8th Annual Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup. Volunteers will clean-up the lands, banks, tributaries, and waters of Rock Creek. Our goal is total stream cleanup of Rock Creek and its tributaries, the parks connected to Rock Creek, and the neighborhoods near Rock Creek where trash originates.  ::   Please dress appropriately for the weather. Wear sturdy boots or sneakers, no sandals.  ::  What to Bring - Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Feel free to bring your own tools and gloves if you have them. If you have trash grabbers or nets, please bring them. Bring water and any snacks that you may want.

Birds and Buildings Presentation Workshop
Presenter: Lisbeth Fuisz from Lights Out DC / City Wildlife
Description: A discussion on the problem that migratory birds face from glass and buildings and an explanation of how home owners and building managers can help to mitigate the problem. We will also explain how the public can get involved in our citizen science program that rescues injured and dead birds.

City Wildlife Workshop
Presenter: Paula Goldberg from City Wildlife
Description: 
The City Wildlife presentation introduces a general audience to urban wildlife and the challenges they face in the city. We will focus on the work of the center and our two outreach programs, Lights Out DC and Duck Watch. Participants will engage in an interactive segment about when to help animals that may need human intervention. Come and learn more about living side by side with our wild neighbors!
