The Lafayette-Pointer Recreation Center was recently renovated and reopened in 2021. Along with the renovation, the name "Pointer" was added to the center and adjacent park in honor of Captain George Pointer. Captain Pointer was born into slavery in 1773, purchased his freedom at age 19, and his family later settled on the land where the new recreation center and park stands. His family was among the early African-American landowners that communed at the site from the 1830s until 1928 when their homes were taken by eminent domain to build Lafayette Elementary School and Lafayette Park. If outdoor activities are your thing, Lafayette-Pointer Recreation Center has something for you!
