The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) in partnership with the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) developed a new website to better serve DC residents and visitors who access DPR information online.
The new website is the launch of a customer-focused initiative to improve the level of service and transparency to the residents and groups that DPR serves. The new website seeks to provide the following:
- Accessibility - Ensures that web components meet Section 508 accessibility regulations governing web accessibility for residents with disabilities.
- Mobile Access - Improves access to web content on mobile devices.
- Intuitive Navigation - Makes better use of menus and graphics to move visitors through the site. A greater focus on the "3-Click Rule."
- Web 2.0 - Incorporates new functionality, such as dynamic forms, blogs and multimedia.
- Maintainability - Reduces the number of steps required to modify or add content; thus ensuring content stays current.
Site Navigation
The most notable difference visitors will encounter is the new navigation bar. The new website has taken the old list of links from the home page and created a tabbed navigation bar with categorized links. Under each tab the three most frequently visited sections are listed. Additional content may be displayed by clicking the “View All” link at the bottom of each section.
Breadcrumb Trails
The new site also makes use of breadcrumbs, which appear in the top left corner of a page just above the title “Department of Parks and Recreation.” This series of links help guide visitors through the website and allow them to quickly jump to other content.
Maps
DPR began a second project in conjunction with the web migration. The DPR Maps Application is a part of the customer-focused. The map provides more information on DPR recreation centers and facilities through a more accessible user-interface. See related projects for more information on the DPR Map Application.
Goal/Milestones :
- January 2010—DPR met with OCTO to hold the migration kickoff meeting.
- February 2010—DPR sitemap finalized.
- June 2010—DPR launches new website.
