(Washington, DC) – The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced its 9th Annual Ward 8 Breast Cancer Awareness Day: Reflections of Pink will occur Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Bald Eagle Recreation Center and Oxon Run Park in Washington, DC.

Kicking off DPR’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities, DPR will host “Pink Madness Week” from Sunday, October 15th through Saturday, October 21st. This will be a week of planned events for breast cancer survivors, co-survivors and their families in Ward 8.  All of which builds anticipation for Saturday's Ward 8 Breast Cancer Awareness Day, which is open to the public.

“This goes beyond being proud of my agency,” said DPR’s Director Keith A. Anderson. “What began as a walk with less than one hundred people has turned into a week-long activation to encourage and empower thousands of residents affected by breast cancer.”

Sunday through Friday, Pink Madness Week consists of public and private events to enrich and uplift families. The events are powered by DPR’s Young Men of Promise and include:  a visit to the Washington Redskins’ game of the week, Pink Madness Basketball Game, “Tackle Breast Cancer” football showcase, “Skate for a Cure,” Pink Madness Family Dinner and “Friday Fight Cancer Night.”

Saturday October 21st, the Ward 8 Breast Cancer Awareness Walk sets the pace for the day as a social fun walk through Oxon Run Park for the entire family starting at 8 a.m. The walk continues an eight year tradition in honor of a former DPR employee, Diane Bushrod, who died from breast cancer in 2006. The walk concludes with a yoga cool down, food, nutrition workshops, mammogram demonstrations, and giveaways. There will also be a fun zone called “Play Day” annually hosted by 8 Arts & Culture, that will feature flag football, rock climbing wall, softball tournament, moon bounces, face painting, dance competition, giant board games and much more.
