(Washington, DC) – On Friday, January 1, 2016, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by Girls on the Run to lead a 5K run/walk in the Kingman Park neighborhood as part of the Mayor’s FitDC initiative – her effort to promote health and wellness in Washington, DC.  The event is free and open to the public; residents can register here.

“Washington, DC is known globally for its extensive urban green spaces, walking and biking paths, and its world-class parks system,” said Mayor Bowser. “Last year, I committed to a fresh start to health and wellness for the residents of the District of Columbia. We completed walks in all eight wards and provided information and inspiration to thousands of DC residents.  We will continue to deliver on that promise in 2016.”

As part of her commitment to health and wellness, Mayor Bowser has directed the Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) to waive resident fees at DPR Fitness Centers. Previously, the fitness centers required a paid membership for access, but for 2016, those resident fees will be waived. DPR Fitness Centers offer a variety of exercise equipment, including elliptical machines, stationary bikes, treadmills, free weights, universal weight machines and more. Residents can visit DPR’s websiteto find the closest fitness center.
