Washington, DC - The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has opened registration for the 30th Annual DC Senior Games. Registration continues through Wednesday, May 1, 2013. The DC Senior Games are scheduled to take place Monday, May 6 - Monday, May 13 at various locations throughout the District of Columbia.
The yearly competition, hosted by DPR in partnership with the District of Columbia Office on Aging (DCOA), brings together seniors from across the District to participate in athletic activities that promote healthy living for a longer, more robust life. Over 150 athletes competed in the 2012 DC Senior Games. Each year, the DC Senior Games features activities like swimming, basketball, bowling, tennis, track and field, horseshoe toss, archery, and softball.
Jesus Aguirre, Director of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation states, "DPR is proud to once again host the DC Senior Games. DPR provides our senior adults access to various events, programs, and services for healthy living and a higher quality of life. This is extremely important as seniors are healthier and living longer."
Athletes who participated in the 2012 DC Senior Games could qualify to compete in the National Senior Games, which are held every odd numbered year. In 2011, over 50 seniors represented the District of Columbia at the National Senior Games in Houston, Texas. This year’s National Senior Games are scheduled for July 21 – August 5, 2013 in Cleveland, Ohio. The DC Senior Games opening ceremony will take place on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 10 am at the legendary Howard Theatre, located at 620 T Street NW.
There is a $35 registration fee per athlete. The registration fee includes entrance fees and a t-shirt. Registration closes at 11:59 pm on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 though early registration is highly recommended. Registration for the DC Senior Games can be completed online by visiting the 2013 Senior Games web page or seniors may apply in person at one of DPR's recreation centers.
