Washington, DC - The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will host the 28th Annual Senior Games from Monday, May 2, 2011 – Friday, May 6, 2011. The games will be held at various locations throughout the District of Columbia.

The yearly competition, held by DPR in partnership with the District of Columbia Office on Aging (DCOA), brings together seniors from across the District to participate in athletic activities that promote healthy living for a longer, more robust life. Over 120 athletes competed in the 2010 DC Golden Olympics. Each year, the Senior Games features activities including swimming, basketball, golf, bowling, tennis, track and field, horse shoe toss, archery, softball and more.

Jesús Aguirre, Director of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation states, “DPR is proud to once again host the DC Senior Games. DPR provides our senior adults access to various events, programs, and services for healthy living and a higher quality of life. This is extremely important as seniors are healthier and living longer.”

The National Senior Games will also be held this year. They are scheduled for June 16-30, 2011 in Houston, Texas. Athletes who participated in the 2010 DC Senior Games qualified to compete in the National Senior Games, which are held every odd numbered year. In 2009, 59 seniors represented the District of Columbia at the National Senior Games in San Francisco, California.

The DC Senior Games opening ceremony will take place on Monday, May 2, 2011, 10:00am, at the Deanwood Community Center, 1350 49th Street, NE. The closing ceremony will also be held at Deanwood Community Center on Friday, May 6, from 4:00pm – 6:00pm.
