(WASHINGTON, DC) – The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Human Resources Division has launched the annual summer hiring application for 2013.  The summer hire application launched on DPR's website on January 25, 2013 and the application will remain open through the summer.  This hiring process is continuous, therefore applications will be accepted through the summer.  DPR's Human Resources is offering employment opportunities for the following positions at DPR: Aquatics, Camps, Operations and Headquarters.

  • The Summer Aquatics Staff will have the opportunity to be lifeguards, assistant pool managers, and customer service representatives.
  • The Summer Camps Staff will have the opportunity to be creative, work with youth, and develop professional goals, while enjoying all that DPR has to offer Washington, DC’s youth.
  • The Summer Operations Staff will have the opportunity to assist with DPR facilities, daily warehouse operations and transportation/CDL licensed drivers.
  • The Summer Headquarters Staff will have the opportunity to assist the DPR's Central Office location with administration duties. Staff will be assigned to a specific division within headquarters. This is an office environment and professional attire is required.

DPR strives to provide high quality recreational programming for District residents of all ages, and is looking for talented individuals to join our team. DPR is hiring for a variety of positions.  To learn more about the qualifications and responsibilities of each position, go to Position Descriptions.  For more information about DPR's programs, go to Program Descriptions.  Once a position of interest is identified, fill out the online Summer Hire Application.

DPR's Summer Hire hiring process is as follows:

  • Apply online - Complete the application and personal statement (to the best of your ability) for the program that you are interested in.  Please be certain to make any edits and corrections to your application prior to submission.
  • Confirmation - Applicants will receive an e-mail confirmation that your application has been received.
  • Application Screening - Applicants will receive a notification of the status of your application within five business days of submission.
  • Pre-Selection Background Clearance - Applicants that are screened as a highly qualified candidate (based on application and resume), will receive a notification requesting your availability to complete a background clearance in advance.  This does not guarantee employment, however, it will assist DPR's Human Resources in expediting the hiring process if or when selected.  The selection process will begin mid-February and continue through the end of May.
  • Phase 1: Interview Fair.  Applicants who are considered for potential employment based solely on the submitted application, will be sent an invitation to attend an interview fair.  Applicants will be interviewed, at that time, by DPR program managers.
  • Phase 2: Panel Interview.  Once an applicant successfully completes the Phase 1: Interview Fair, applicants will be invited for a 2nd interview.  Applicants will be notified within 10 business days of the Phase 2: Panel Interview if they have been selected for the position.
  • Pre-Employment Clearance.  Once an applicant successfully completes Phase 1 and Phase 2, applicants will be required to complete a Background Clearance with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and Suitability Clearance with the DC Department of Human Resources (DCHR).  All returning summer employees that completed an MPD background check in 2012 or are under the age of 18, will not need to complete an MPD Background check.
  • Phase 3: Placement Interview.  Once an applicant has been selected for placement for Summer 2013, applicants will be required to attend a placement interview.
  • Orientation and Offer Letter.  Once an applicant has successfully completed the hiring process (including passing both MPD and DCHR clearances), applicants will receive an invitation to attend a DPR Human Resources Orientation.  All on-boarding documentation will be completed, an on-boarding package will be distributed, and applicants will receive a formal offer letter from DPR HR.  The offer letter will state your position, program, salary, start date, and end date.

Please note that applicants are only permitted to start working once all steps are completed and a signed offer letter from DPR HR has been presented to the applicant.  The DPR Summer Hire process is not the same at the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).   Please click here to be re-directed to the SYEP application.
