DPR to Participate in Mayor Gray's One City Summer Kick Off

DPR will Close 29 Recreation Centers; Present "DPR Town" at the Annual One City Summer Kick Off Event

(Washington, DC)  Today, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation announced that DPR will participate in Mayor Gray's One City Summer Kick off.  29 recreation centers will close on Saturday, June 15, 2013 to allow for staff support at Mayor Gray's One City Summer Kick Off event from 9 am to 5 pm, on the grounds of RFK Stadium, Lots 6 & 7 (next to the Annual Truck Touch event).  DPR staff from various centers and central office will be on hand to present "DPR Town" at the One City Summer Kick Off event.  District residents are encouraged to come out and participate in the city-wide kick off event.   

"DPR Town" at One City Summer Kick Off will include:

  • Performances by a salsa dance troupe, brazilian samba, zumba and more;
  • a Kids Zone with moon bounce, face painting, environmental activities, and arts & crafts;
  • Information Tables from PlayDC, United Health Care, Achieve DC, Field of Dreams, and the Gridiron Classic; along with healthy snack and fitness testing, biometric testing, CPR demo's and lifeguard recruitment;
  • a Sports Zone with fitness boot camp, basketball and quick start tennis demonstrations and classes;
  • free food including sno-cones and popcorn;
  • DPR's Fun Wagon and Skate Mobile;
  • and much, much more!

"Every summer DPR offers camps, outdoor pools and a host of programs to District residents and visitors.  This summer, DPR is kicking off the District's first Parks and Recreation Master Plan and introducing 'Outdoor Adventure Camp', a new environmentally focused summer camp.  DPR is also in the final phases of Mayor Gray's Play DC: Playground Improvement Project, renovating 32 playgrounds across the District," said DPR Director Jesús Aguirre.  "In an effort to highlight all of the programs, services and amenities that DPR has to offer, I am excited to present "DPR Town" at this year's One City Summer Kick Off.   In keeping with DPR's initiative, we encouraging everyone to come out and Move by participating in activities that promote physical fitness, Grow by learning more about programs that promote personal growth, and Be Green by taking part in environmental stewardship and visiting our parks.  I look forward to seeing everyone at this year's One City Summer Kick Off and wish all of our residents and visitors a safe, Move, Grow & Be Green summer."
