DPR Prepares for High Weekend Temperatures

Friday, July 6, 2012
Outdoor activities & fields are closed; Pools will operate on extended hours

(Washington, DC) The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Warning for the Metropolitan area.  Record high temperatures are expected over the weekend for the District of Columbia and surrounding areas.  Temperatures are projected to reach 99 degrees on Friday, July 6th; 106 degrees on Saturday, July 7th; and 102 degrees on Sunday, July 8th.

Due to the extremely high temperatures, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will close all fields on Friday, July 6th for the entire weekend.  All outdoor activities, both DPR Sponsored and Permitted activities, are cancelled for the weekend.  All Baseball Tournaments, including Little League Tournaments being held at Banneker, Fort Lincoln, Guy Mason and Fort Reno are cancelled.

As a result of last weekends storm, there are a few DPR facilities that do not have Air Conditioning - these sites remain closed.

DPR Sites that remain closed:

  • Benning Stoddert Recreation Center
  • Kalorama Recreation Center
  • Rita Bright Recreation Center
  • Kennedy Recreation Center
  • Stoddert Recreation Center
  • Theodore Hagins Recreation Center
  • Therapeutic Recreation Center

DPR also announced on July 4th that outdoor pools would operate on extended hours through Sunday, July 8th. View Pools Extended Weekend Hours.

DPR will also continue to operate Recreation Centers and indoor Aquatic Facilities that have normal Saturday hours as cooling centers, during their normal hours of operation.  At a cooling center, residents can come in, cool off and rest a bit as a respite from the heat, before going back outdoors.  For up-to-date information on the District's Heat Advisory, where to go for cooling centers and tips to beat the heat, please visit Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) website.
