WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) released the 2011 Fall Program Guide, "Make New Friends This Fall". This Fall DPR offers sports leagues, teen programs, personal enrichment programs, cultural arts, senior citizen programs, therapeutic recreation, aquatics, fitness and exercise, afternoon access and much more. With 68 recreation centers now open, DPR's program offering is better than ever.

Take some time to review DPR's 2011 Fall Program Guide. There is a new "active lifestyle" magazine cover that focuses on a few of the activities and programs District residents will find exciting. For example, the Latin-inspired "Zumba" dance fitness craze is racing across the nation and DPR will offer these classes at a few of our sites; the "Fit To Live" program incorporates self-esteem, nutrition and physical fitness as a holistic approach to recreation for youth; and DPR's Pop Warner Football has come home from the national championships with the trophy two years in a row, can they make it a three-pete?

Make new friends this fall and visit our recreation centers, fields and playgrounds. A few have recently undergone renovations. Watkins Field and Playground opened with a new artificial turf field, new playground and renovations to the basketball court. Guy Mason was closed for renovation in June 2010 and reopened this past season. The renovation project added many new features to the facility. The community center is now fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and includes an elevator, ADA accessible restrooms, and a new HVAC system. Residents will be able to enjoy a new pottery workshop in the center's basement which includes a kiln room, glazing kitchen and spray booth. Likewise, Chevy Chase Recreation Center reopened in August 2011. The $4.2 million project features a number of state-of-the-art elements, including: a spray park, a new "Tot Lot" play equipment for toddlers, a new playground for children, a renovated and expanded recreation center; a new stand-alone, and a 6,000-square-foot dog park.

Although the weather outside may be getting cooler, District residents can enjoy our indoor aquatic facilities that are open  year round. Take advantage of the many swim classes available for children and youth.

So get out of the house and into a DPR facility.

A limited number of printed guides are available at DPR locations, public libraries, and select government agencies. The current guide can be found on the DPR website, DPR.DC.GOV.
