Harvesting a Season of Thanks with DPR

(Washington, DC)  – November is a time of reflection as we think about all of the things we are grateful for.  During this season of thanks, DPR will offer a variety of events including clothing and food drives, community potlucks, a Ward wide chess tournament, Family Fun game night and more.

Please remember that registration opens for the winter program offerings this month and that November is National Diabetes Month, so while everyone is enjoying the holidays, please remember to stay healthy this holiday season!

So come out, join us and be sure to let us know your thoughts, share an idea or if you are attending one of our events, please share your experiences with us via Grade.DC.gov.

DPR is looking for baseball (co-ed) and softball (girls) coaches for the 2015 season. 
Coaching provides a great opportunity to spend time with youth, teaching them baseball/softball fundamentals, team spirit, sportsmanship and more.
Coaches are needed for:
            * Baseball:  T-Ball (ages 5-6) or Machine Pitch (ages 7-8)
            * Softball:  Junior Girls (ages 8-11) or Youth Girls (ages 12-15)

Warm Hearts Hats, Socks & Gloves Drive

Fort Stevens Senior Side & Recreation Center (1327 Van Buren St., NW – Ward 4)

The Fort Stevens Senior Side and Recreation Center will host a sock and glove drive.  Residents are asked to drop off new or gently used socks, gloves and hats and items will be donated to the homeless during the cold winter months.

Sherwood Young Men, Future Leaders (YMFL) Food 2 Feed Canned Food Drive

The Sherwood Young Men, Future Leaders program is collecting canned and non-perishable food items to be donated for less fortunate families for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Aquatics Extended Maintenance Closure

The facility will close for it’s yearly, extended maintenance and cleaning.  The facility is expected to re-open on Monday, November 24.

Young Men, Future Leaders (YMFL) Field Day

Come out for a day of outdoor activities, sports and fun as DPR launches a new program, "Young Men, Future Leaders" and celebrates the programs first kick off event.  Activities will include soccer, kickball, an obstacle course, flag football, tug-of-war and basketball; as well as kickboxing and skate park demonstrations.

Annual Ward 7 Thanksgiving Day -"Feed the Homeless Program"
Fort Davis Community Center (1400 41st Street, SE – Ward 7)
Time: 7 am – 1 pm
Ages: All are Welcome
Staff and volunteers will gather at Fort Davis Recreation Center beginning at 7am, to cook and prepare breakfast for the homeless citizens of the District of Columbia.  After the food is packaged, staff and volunteers will begin to deliver the food to the homeless citizens throughout the city.

November 28
Recreation Centers to operate on an Alternative Schedule
Select DPR centers will open from 10 am to 8 pm on the day after Thanksgiving.  All other centers will operate from 11:30 am to 8 pm.  Aquatic facilities will operate on their normal schedule.  Please visit DPR’s website for the “2014 Thanksgiving Holiday Schedule” press release, which will be released on or before Monday, November 17, 2014.

Turkey Bowl Flag Football

Kennedy Recreation Center (1401 7th Street, NW – Ward 6)

Ages: 10 - 14 yr.
Kennedy recreation center will host a one day, "Turkey-Bowl" flag football tournament for the youth.   8 teams will participate from Kennedy, Stead, Rita Bright, Columbia Heights, Marie Reed and Kalorama Recreation Centers.
