DC Pop Warner Takes Home a Super Bowl Championship for the Fourth Year in a Row

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced that the Marshall Heights Bison from Washington, DC, are the 56th Annual Pop Warner Division 1 Junior Midget Super Bowl Champions. The Bison defeated the Gwen Cherry Bulls (FL) in a shut out game with a final score of Marshall Heights 14 vs. Gwen Cherry 0.   The Marshall Heights Bison have won back-to-back Pop Warner National Championship.  The 56th Annual Pop Warner Super Bowl National Championship games were held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

"The District of Columbia is very proud of the Marshall Heights Bison on their second win in the Pop Warner Super Bowl,” said Mayor Vincent C. Gray. “I congratulate the players, coaches, parents and government officials who worked together to lead the Bison to victory."

The three DC Pop Warner teams that competed in the week long Super Bowl Championship games had stellar records during the 2012 Pop Warner regular season, and amazing games during the post season.

The Marshall Heights Bison secured the Division 1 Junior Midget title (ages 10 - 13). The Bison ended the regular season with a 6-1 record with an amazing "Road to the Super Bowl".  In November, the Bison secured the D1 Jr. Midget Eastern Regional Championship Title by defeating the CYA Gators (PA) in a shut out with a final score of 34-0.  Once they advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship Games, the Bison played against the Oak Cliff Titans (TX) with a final score of 38-0.  The Bison then advanced to play the Santa Margaret Titans (CA) with a final score of 32-0.  Finally the Bison went on to their Super Bowl win against the Gwen Cherry Bulls (FL) with a final score of 14-0.

The Beacon House Falcons competed for the Division 1 PeeWee title (ages 9 - 12). The Falcons ended the regular season with a 7-0 record and made it all the way to the final Super Bowl game match up in their division.  The Falcons secured the D1 PeeWee Eastern Regional Championship Title, on November 24th, by defeating the North Philly Aztecs in overtime with a final score of 14-12.  Once they advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship Games, the Falcons played against the East Bay Wildcats (CA) with a final score of 32-0.  The Falcons then advanced to play the Hartford Hurricanes (CT) with a final score of 22-0.  The Falcons then advanced to play the Liberty City Warriors (FL) in the D1 PeeWee Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship Game, where they suffered a tough defeat with a final score of Falcons 0 vs. Warriors 6. 

The Watkins Hornets competed for the Division 1 Junior PeeWee title (ages 8 - 11).  The Hornets ended the regular season with a 6-0-1 record.  The Hornets secured the D1 Jr. PeeWee Eastern Regional Championship Title on November 24th, by defeating the Northwest Raiders (PA) with a final score of 13-2.    Once they advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship games, the Hornets played against the Richmond Perrine Giants (FL), suffering a loss with a final score or Hornets 13 vs. Giants 26.  From there, the Hornets then qualified for the Consolation game, where they defeated the Connecticut New Haven Steelers (CT) in a shut out, with a final score of 41-0.

All games were televised on ESPN3 and www.PopWarner.com.

With this years win at the 56th Annual Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship Games, DC's Pop Warner teams have now taken home the Pop Warner Super Bowl National title for 4 years in a row.  

  • Marshall Heights Bison clinched the 2012 Division 1 Junior Midget Pop Warner Super Bowl National title.
  • Beacons House Falcons clinched the 2012 Division 1 PeeWee National Runner-Up champion title.
  • Marshall Heights Bison won the 2011 Division 1 PeeWee Pop Warner Super Bowl National title.
  • Beacon House Falcons won the 2011 Division 1 Junior PeeWee Pop Warner National Runner-Up champion title.
  • Beacon House Falcons secured the 2010 Division 1 Junior PeeWee Pop Warner Super Bowl National title.
  • Watkins Hornets secured the 2010 Division 1 Junior Midgets National Runner-Up champion title.
  • Watkins Hornets won the 2009 Division 1 PeeWee Pop Warner Super Bowl National title.

DPR holds the DC Pop Warner league charter, and is only one of two recreation departments nationwide to hold a charter.  2012 was the first year that DPR hosted the Eastern Regional Championship Final game; and over 68 teams, and close to 1,500 youth, participated in the DC Pop Warner league during the regular season.
