(WASHINGTON, DC) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray today joined city officials and members of the Fort Greble community for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the newly renovated Fort Greble Playground located at the Fort Greble Recreation Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Elmira Street, SW, in Ward 8.

“DPR is pleased with the progress of the Play DC playgrounds that have been opened across the District,” said Department of Parks of Recreation (DPR) Director Jesús Aguirre. “Providing opportunities for leisure activities is important, as engaging in leisure greatly enhances the quality of life and wellness of children, youth, families and adults.”

The Fort Greble Playground is the seventh play space that's completed under the Play DC initiative. Play DC is a citywide, multi-year project, and the largest playground renovation project in the District's history. Several community meetings were held previously to finalize the project. Fort Greble's design is inspired by local Civil War history, which builds in fun play elements, inspired by history and by nature. As part of the Sustainable DC initiative, the park features a green roof pavilion, and an extensive storm water management system for its new community garden. New amenities include a Pebble Flex® safety surface for the playground, an artificial field turf, new splash pad, ADA-accessible equipment and picnic tables, barbecue grills, a new parking lot with re-enforced turf, an outdoor classroom, new basketball courts and bleachers.

Mayor Gray's Play DC: Playground Improvement Project is a citywide effort, which has leveraged the expertise of various District government agencies, local community groups and District residents. DPR currently operates 78 playgrounds. To date, Rosedale, Palisades, Noyes, Fort Stanton, Volta Park, Raymond and Fort Greble playgrounds are complete under the Play DC initiative.
