WASHINGTON, DC – Today Mayor Vincent C. Gray was joined by city officials, Rosedale Community Leaders, area residents and youth at the Rosedale Community Center Pool to begin the summer pool season in the District of Columbia and for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly renovated Rosedale Community Center.

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is opening all 19 outdoor pools, 5 children’s pools and 11 spray parks starting Saturday, May 26. The District’s outdoor aquatic facilities will be open the entire Memorial Day weekend - Saturday, Sunday and Monday - from 12:00 noon until 6:00 pm. District of Columbia residents swim for free all summer at all DPR aquatic facilities.

While the outdoor pools will be open on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, all DPR recreation and community center offices will be closed on Sunday and Monday". All indoor aquatic facilities will be closed on Monday, May 28th with the exception of the Wilson Aquatic Center.

“The kick-off of the summer pool season is just the beginning of the District's One City Summer initiative. Throughout the summer season government agencies will offer various safe, productive, engaging events and activities for children, youth, adults and seniors. The goal is to build on the success from last summer by again offering a comprehensive safe-community effort that involves an integrated approach to the summer, with more than 20 District agencies and numerous community-based and faith-based organizations coming together to offer expanded programming,” said Mayor Gray.

After the Memorial Day Weekend, outdoor pools will be open on weekends only (Friday and Saturday), from 12 noon until 6 pm, until June 17th when District Public Schools are dismissed for the summer months.  After June 17th, all outdoor pools will operate on a summer schedule - open six days a week and closed one day per week for cleaning and maintenance.

DPR Director Jesús Aguirre said, "We look forward to residents enjoying all of the pools that are opening this weekend. While we want everyone to have a great time in the District's pools, I would like to remind everyone that safety is key. We encourage everyone to learn how to swim and to follow all pool rules."
