Mayor Vincent C. Gray Recognizes Washington Kastles for
3rd World Team Tennis Title & 2nd Undefeated Season
(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today Mayor Vincent C. Gray, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, DPR Director Jesús Aguirre, other government officials and fans congratulated Washington Kastles Team Owner Mark Ein and the District of Columbia’s history-making World Team Tennis (WTT) team, for their second consecutive 16-0 season and third WTT Championship in four years.
“I want to congratulate the Washington Kastles for becoming the first team to go undefeated in the 37-year history of World Team Tennis and for 32 straight wins,” Mayor Gray said. “Owner Mark Ein and his team are also winners off the field, as they are supporters of our youth and efforts to bring diversity to the game of tennis.”
Mayor Gray presented a proclamation to Ein on the steps of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue. The Kastles had a 16-0 record this season. They became the first team in U.S. major professional sports history to complete two consecutive perfect seasons, by defeating the Sacramento Capitals 20-19 on September 16, 2012.
The Kastles also have played a key role in the revitalization of the Southwest Waterfront by building Kastles Stadium at The Wharf in 2011. They have been drawing tens of thousands of fans from throughout the city and region, including First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters, Sasha and Malia, to filled-to-capacity matches.
From the start, the Kastles have given-back generously to the community by hosting once-in-a-lifetime clinics for District children. The clinics have been led by Coach Murphy Jensen and world-renowned players like Serena and Venus Williams. During their five-year franchise history, the Kastles have supported 100-plus charities that benefit underserved children; and community, police and military organizations through the donation of more than $600,000 in cash and goods, including 6,000 tickets, 3,000 kids’ tennis racquets and Kastles apparel.
