Modified Holiday Schedule for Select District Services

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The District of Columbia Government offices will be closed on Presidents Day (Monday, February 19, 2018). Below is information regarding critical, on-going District operations for these days: 

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will suspend sanitation services and most parking enforcement. These services will resume on Tuesday, February 20.

  • Trash and recycling collections in once-a-week collection neighborhoods will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week.
  • In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday’s and Thursday’s collections will slide to Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday’s and Friday’s collections will slide to Wednesday and Saturday.
  • The Fort Totten and Benning Road transfer stations will be closed on the holiday, reopening the following day.
     

Streetcar parking enforcement is daily, including weekends and holidays, e.g., Presidents Day, along H Street and Benning Road, NE, between 3rd Street and Oklahoma Avenue, NE. On Sundays and holidays, streetcar parking enforcement is between 8 am and 11 pm. Enforcement on Mondays—Thursdays is 6 am to midnight; and on Fridays and Saturdays, enforcement runs between 6 am and 2 am. Normal enforcement citywide of other parking violations resumes February 20.

All DC Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) locations will be closed:

  • Saturday, February 17
  • Monday, February 19

Customers visiting a DMV Service Center on other days are encouraged to plan ahead and “Know Before You Go” for services requiring an in-person visit, as customer volume is high before and after a holiday closing. To check customer volume at a specific center, residents can check the service center’s webcams which are refreshed every 60 seconds during normal business hours at dmv.dc.gov. Additionally, DC DMV has more than 55 online services at dmv.dc.gov that enable customers to skip the in-person trip.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will suspend construction activities on the District’s roadways and sidewalks on Monday, February 19, 2018. Lane closures will not be allowed for non-emergency work on the roadways and sidewalks within the District’s right of way. This includes manhole access and construction-related deliveries. DDOT encourages permit holders to take extra measures to secure their work sites during the moratorium. Normal enforcement citywide of other parking violations resumes February 20.

DDOT will not run normal weekday reversible lane operations on the following corridors:

  • Connecticut Avenue NW between Legation Street and Woodley Road
  • 16th Street NW between Arkansas Avenue and Irving Street
  • Canal Road between Chain Bridge and Foxhall Road
  • Independence Avenue between 4th Street SW and 2nd Street SE
  • Rock Creek Parkway (controlled by the National Park Service)
     

The DC Streetcar, DC Circulator and Capital Bikeshare will operate on their regular schedules.

All DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) facilities will be closed on Monday, February 19th.  

  • The permits office will be closed on these dates. 
  • All grass fields are closed for the season. 
  • Parks, playgrounds and synthetic fields will be open for general use, however, gated locations will remain locked.  
  • Previously permitted events on unlocked synthetic fields can take place as scheduled.  

Most DC Public Libraries will be closed except for the following which will be open from 9:30 am - 5:30 pm.
 

Residents needing Department of Human Services (DHS) assistance can dial the Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093 or 311 for questions or to arrange transportation. 

Low-Barrier shelters for individuals operate year-round and will be open 5 PM to 9 AM on Monday, February 19. If a Hypothermia Alert is issued, all shelters are open all day and will remain open during the extent of the Hypothermia Alert.

  • Patricia Handy Place for Women at 810 5th Street, NW 
  • Community for Creative Non-Violence (CCNV) at 425 Second Street, NW, Drop In Center (Open only during Hypothermia Alert)

Seasonal Shelters are open daily from 9 pm to 7 am November 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018.

Women- 

  • King Greenleaf Recreation Center, 201 N Street, SW

Co-Ed

  • Emery Recreation Center, 5801 Georgia Avenue, NW

Hypothermia Shelters are open from 7 pm to 7 am anytime a Hypothermia Alert is called, except in recreation centers, where, due to previously scheduled programming, the shelter opens at 9 pm

Men- 

  • Sacred Heart Church at 16th Street and Park Road, NW  
  • Community for Creative Non-Violence (CCNV) at 425 Second Street, NW  
  • Salvation Army at 3335 Sherman Ave NW  
  • Banneker Recreation Center at 2500 Georgia Avenue, NW (Monday - Friday; 9 PM - 7 AM)
  • Kennedy Recreation Center at 1401 7th Street NW (Monday - Friday; 9 PM - 7 AM)

Women- 

  • New Covenant Baptist at 1301 W Street, SE  
  • Sherwood Recreation Center at 640 10th St, NE  (Monday - Friday; 9 PM - 7 AM)
  • Community of Christ at 3526 Massachusetts Ave, NW 

Families seeking emergency shelter can call the DC Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093 or 311 at any time day or night. When the DC Government is open, families may also visit the Virginia Williams Family Resource Center at 920 Rhode Island Avenue, NE, Monday - Thursday between 8 am and 4:30 pm and Friday between 8 am and 12:30 pm.
