The National Park Service (NPS), the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), and Councilmember Tommy Wells today announced the kick off of “Movies by Moonlight”. This is the first collaboration of its kind to provide residents of all ages and families of all sizes the opportunity to enjoy viewing free, family-oriented films in NPS outdoor settings.

Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells lauded the collaboration between NPS and DPR. “The National Park Service operates 90% of the parkland in the District,” Wells said. “’Movies by Moonlight’ is a great example of how we can utilize those NPS parks, with the help of DPR, to provide quality recreation programming for DC residents.”

“Movies by Moonlight” will take place on Monday, August 13th and Saturday, September 15th at Lincoln Park, 13th and East Capitol Streets, SE. Movies will begin at 8:45 pm and viewers are invited to bring their own snacks, lawn chairs, and blankets. Alcoholic beverages and grills are not permitted.

DPR Director Jesús Aguirre stated, “DPR is excited to partner with NPS and Councilmember Wells to show films at Lincoln Park.” He continued, “We share the same goal of providing safe recreational and physical activities and services for residents of all ages in green spaces across the District. We look forward to working together on this and other future initiatives.”

“Movies by Moonlight” kicks off Monday, August 13th with Night at the Museum.

Ben Stiller leads an all-star cast including Robin Williams and Dick Van Dyke in this hilarious blockbuster hit. When good-hearted dreamer Larry Daley (Stiller) is hired as night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, he soon discovers that an ancient curse brings all the exhibits to life after the sun sets. Suddenly, Larry finds himself face-to-face with a T. rex skeleton, tiny armies of Romans and cowboys and a mischievous monkey who taunts him to the breaking point. But with the help of President Teddy Roosevelt (Williams), Larry may just figure out a way to control the chaos and become a hero in his son's eyes. Boasting jaw-dropping special effects and laugh-out-loud moments, Night at the Museum is your ticket to nonstop fun!

On Saturday, September 15, at 8:45pm “Movies by Moonlight” continues at Lincoln Park with the family film Madagascar.

Madagascar is a 2005 American computer-animated comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation, and released in movie theaters on May 27, 2005. The film tells the story of four Central Park Zoo animals who have spent their lives in blissful captivity and are unexpectedly shipped back to Africa, getting shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar. The voices of Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock, and David Schwimmer are featured. Other voices include Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, and Andy Richter.

“Movies by Moonlight” is a joint collaboration that is an extension of DPR’s annual summer Movie Night schedule,
which can be found in DPR’s Spring/Summer Guide, online at dpr.dc.gov.
