(Washington, DC) – Beginning September 8, Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Office of the State Superintendent for Education and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) mark the resumption of the District’s Afterschool Meals program available at 10 designated recreation centers. These sites serve free and nutritious grab-and-go style meals weekdays from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
“Given the prolonged and ongoing impact of the public health emergency on our community, we are making every possible effort to ensure that residents have what they need,” said DPR Director Delano Hunter. “DPR has not sponsored the Afterschool Meals program since 2007, but we are in uncharted territory. As a complement to other city-wide sites, providing additional resources to support food security in such a difficult time for many residents is critically important,” said DPR Director Delano Hunter.
School is in session in the District of Columbia. While most of the District’s students are engaging in school virtually, the Bowser administration wants to ensure that children have options and access to wholesome meals. There are no applications, income requirements or ID required for youth 18 and under visiting a DPR Afterschool Meal site.
