DPR Tennis - Class Descriptions

DPR Tennis Classes

Adult Beginner (Levels 2.0 & 2.5)

The Adult Beginner program is a terrific introduction for adults who are interested in learning the basics of tennis. This class will go over the fundamentals of tennis focusing on basic stroke development including forehands, backhands, volleys, and serves. No prior experience is necessary, and racquets are not provided so we encourage participants to bring their own. Make sure to bring water and wear appropriate tennis shoes that have a low profile and a wide outer base at the toe. No running shoes please.

Adult Intermediate (Levels 3.0 & 3.5)

The Adult Intermediate program is geared for the player who has achieved stroke dependability and direction on shots within reach, including forehand and backhand volleys, but still lacks depth and variety. Emphasis will be placed on more aggressive net play, footwork skills to improve court coverage, and focus on groundstroke specifics (control, direction, depth, and power). Make sure to bring water and wear appropriate tennis shoes that have a low profile and a wide outer base at the toe. No running shoes please.

Adult Advanced (Levels 4.0 +)

The Adult Advance Program player has begun to master the use of power and spins, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots and is able to move opponents up and back. First serves are hit with power/accuracy and second serves are placed well with depth. This player can rush the net with some success in both singles and doubles. Focus will be on live ball drills that incorporate singles and doubles strategy. No running shoes please.

Tiny Tots (Parent & Me)

The Tiny Tot program is a terrific introduction to tennis for children, emphasizing fun and success. Played on a modified court, this program will include skill-building games and basic stroke production. Players will work on tracking the ball, hand-eye coordination, and balance with Parents being involved in the action.  A parent must be present for class. Racquets are not provided and please bring water and/or a snack! Foam balls and/or Red(36ft) tennis balls. 3-5yrs old.

Junior Beginner

The Junior Beginner program is for juniors who are new to the game. Players will play on a 36-foot or 60-foot court with Red (30ft) or Orange (60ft) tennis balls. Class will provide a good foundation while emphasizing proper stroke mechanics and basic footwork. Again, “FUN” is the magic word. Racquets are not provided and please bring water and/or a snack! 5-7yrs old.

Junior Advanced Beginner

This class is for players who have mastered all aspects of the junior beginner level. This group plays with Orange (60ft) or Green Dot (78ft) tennis balls on a full court. Emphasis on rallying and serving from the baseline. Goal is to start playing tennis on a consistent basis 7-10yrs old. Racquets are not provided and please bring water and/or a snack! 7-10yrs old.

Junior Intermediate

This class is designed to continue building an athletic base while teaching the fundamentals necessary to serve, rally and score using a rally or game-based structure. Green Dot (78ft) tennis balls on a full court. Racquets are not provided and please bring water and/or a snack! 10-13yrs old.

Junior Advanced

The Junior Advanced program is for those players that have mastered all aspects of the junior intermediate level. This group is fundamentally sound in both movement and technique and are beginning to work on more advanced patterns of play. Participants are starting to consistently play tennis in tournaments and matches at the high school level. Players are encouraged to have their own racquets. 13-17yrs old.

DPR uses the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) to categorize classes.

What is NTRP?

Developed in 1978, the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) is a classification system that identifies and describes general characteristics of tennis-playing ability. The NTRP General Characteristics Guide outlines the abilities of each level from 1.5 (beginner) through 7.0 (touring pro). Generally, DPR Tennis offers programs for the 2.5 through 4.0 + levels.
