Private Swim Instruction Protocol

The following requirements and safety protocol apply to persons who are granted permits to conduct private swim instruction at DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) pools:

  • Instructor must submit a valid, nationally recognized Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard/CPR Certification (such as Red Cross or Ellis and Associates) to DPR’s Permit Office. Please note that the certification must be valid at the time of submission to DPR.
  • Instructor must provide satisfactory evidence to DPR’s Permit Office that it carries valid Liability Insurance including the following coverage:
    1. Sexual/Physical Abuse & Molestation: $1,000,000 for each occurrence; $2,000,000 aggregate of affirmative abuse and molestation liability coverage. This insurance requirement will be considered met if the general liability insurance includes an affirmative sexual abuse and molestation endorsement for the required amounts. Please note that “silent” coverage under a commercial general liability or professional liability policy are not acceptable.
    2. Commercial General Liability Insurance: Such coverage shall have limits of liability of not less than $1,000,000 for each occurrence, a $2,000,000 general aggregate.
    3. Workers Compensation Insurance: If deemed applicable by DPR’s Permit Office.
  • Instructor must provide equipment and supplies, in accordance with permit guidelines. Please note DPR’s equipment cannot be used for permitted class.
  • Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • All guests entering DPR’s facilities must present a valid photo ID and follow DPR’s admission policies.
  • Children 13 years and older must present a valid photo ID upon entering DPR’s facilities or must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older, with a valid photo ID.
  • Guests are not permitted on the pool deck in street clothes.
  • Children cannot be left unattended without an adult present.
  • All participants must follow DPR’s pool rules and direction from DPR site staff.

Enforcement

Failure to adhere to the above-stated rules and guidelines will result in the non-issuance or revocation of a Private Lesson Permit.
