Communal Farms and Partner Urban Farms

Communal Farms

DPR Communal Farms are urban Ag sites that are organized as communal production farms, managed by DPR staff and community volunteers, with the purpose of providing various ways for community members to receive free food, volunteer, and participate in hands on educational opportunities.  Communal farms can produce more food than community gardens but are more communal than partner urban farms.  Additional traits are listed below

  • Managed by DPR staff as production farms.
  • Community members can come during open farm hours, hosted by DPR staff and/or trained community leaders, to either volunteer, learn about farming, or harvest food.
  • There will be weekly produce giveaways for community members and local food pantries as well as community events throughout the year.

***In the 2023 growing season DPR Communal Farms grew and gave away 13K pounds of produce to 100s of community members in need***

Partner Urban Farms

A DPR Partner Urban Farm is an urban agriculture site that is located on DPR property but is managed and programed by a DPR partner. These partners are all 501c3 organizations that focus on offering gardening and nutrition programs while increasing access to healthy and affordable food to DC communities. These sites are designed to be more production style farms than community gardens with personal plots, but are great places to volunteer to learn more about urban agriculture.
