Banneker Diving Board

Wednesday, June 5, 2024

A statement on the diving board that was formerly at Bannaker outdoor pool.

After close consultation with DC Health, the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the Department of General Services (DGS) will not be able to replace the diving board at Banneker Pool because of changes to the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC). Banneker Pool has a unique design with a deep section in the middle that does not allow for safe, recreational diving from a board. The board that was previously used was installed over 30 years ago under code which has since been updated. DGS and DPR explored multiple diving board lengths and alternative placements but we would still be unable to meet the current MAHC, which requires a measurement of 9 feet deep by 12.5 feet from either side of the center; Banneker measures 7 feet, 9 inches deep by 15 feet to either side of the center due to the curved slope of the pool – which you can see in the graphic below.

We understand this is not ideal, but we remain committed to operating a safe pool that serves over 40,000 visitors each summer.
