(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced the 2013 Spring/Summer permits schedule.  The permit window dates for the upcoming season are currently posted on the DPR website on the "Athletic Fields permit page".

DPR permits outdoor fields and indoor gymnasiums on a seasonal schedule.  Typically DPR's permit schedule runs from early September through mid to late December for the Fall permits season; mid to late December to early March for the Winter permits season; and mid March to late August for the Spring/Summer permits season.  Prior to the scheduling season, DPR opens a 'permit window' - a time period when permit applications are accepted.  Applications received during the permit window are reviewed and applicants are notified of their permit status during the 'notification period'.

The 2013 Spring/Summer permit season is Monday, March 18, 2013 to Friday, August 30, 2013.

The permit window is as follows:

  • Permit Application Window: Monday, December 10, 2012 to Friday, January 4, 2013
  • Application Deadline: 11:59 pm on Friday, January 4, 2013
  • Permit Notifications: Monday, January 28, 2013 to Friday, February 1, 2013.

DPR schedules all athletic field and gymnasium permits in an order of preference:

  • DPR programs
  • DC public schools and public charter schools
  • DPR partners (organizations that have an executed DPR partnership agreement)
  • Private youth leagues and teams
  • Private adult leagues

It is important to remember the following facts when applying for a permit:

  • Grass fields (natural turf) and outdoor basketball courts are currently offline and permits are not being issued.  These fields and courts will go back online on Monday, March 18, 2013 and be available for permitting at that time.
  • Artificial fields (synthetic turf) and indoor basketball courts and gyms are available to be permitted year-round.  All artificial turf fields, indoor basketball courts and gyms are closed from Monday, March 11, 2013 to Sunday, March 17, 2013 for general maintenance, debris removal and brushing of the fields.
  • Requests received after the permit window has closed, will be reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis and applicants will be notified of their status.

DPR currently operates 78 playgrounds, 68 recreation centers, 900 acres of park land, 40 aquatic features (pools and spray parks), 375 parks, over 200 play courts (basketball & tennis), and over 100 athletic fields.
