(Washington, DC)  For city residents still seeking a summer camp experience, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is proud to highlight an available, outdoor camp opportunity at the Palisades Community Center, located at 5200 Sherier Pl., NW. DPR’s Outdoor Adventure Camp is the first camp of its kind. Focusing on the environment, the Outdoor Adventure Camp offers campers four weeks of hiking, swimming, kayaking and an overnight stay in Thurmont, MD, where campers will put their newly acquired skills to use. These skills include orienteering, map reading, tent assembly, how to leave no trace, and more.

“With the summer already underway, DPR continues to provide camps that offer quality programming and this new Outdoor Adventure camp is a great way for children to learn more about the environment,” said DPR Director Jesús Aguirre. “This camp, which keeps within our Move, Grow, Be Green initiative, offers an additional option to complement DPR’s many camp sessions available this summer.”

The Outdoor Adventure Camp, from July 22 to August 16, is at the Palisades Community Center for the first three weeks. The adventure culminates into a week-long overnight stay at Catoctin Mountain Park in Thurmont, MD. To register, click here.

Open to children from ages 8 to 13 years old, the four-week adventure will give them a unique outdoor experience, and allow campers to have a better appreciation for the planet. Tuition is $560 (for District residents), which includes outdoor recreation field trips, six swimming lessons, and a 5-day, 4-night sleep-away experience. Reduced rates are offered to those who qualify. Before and after care are available for a nominal fee.

To sign up for this camp or for additional information on DPR's Environmental program, please call (202) 674-6619 or email [email protected].
