DPR Celebrates Black History Month by Hosting the 6th Annual Black Growers Conference
(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Bowser Administration and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will host the 6th Annual Black Growers Conference on Thursday, February 23, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Arboretum Community Center (2412 Rand Place, NE).
A cultural celebration of Black agriculture, the event will highlight Black agriculturalists including farmers, land workers, and more. Participants will learn about urban farming in Washington, DC and indulge in a farm-to-table dinner steeped in African American culture.
“Black Growers Conference, hosted by DPR’s Environmental Division, is an excellent opportunity to advance the District’s health and wellness initiatives while shining a light on the underappreciated contributions of Black agriculturalists,” said DPR Director Delano Hunter.
The night will include a presentation by Starsha Valentine of Purpose Possible on funding strategies for individuals and organizations. In addition, the conference showcases elements of the exhibit "Cultivate: Growing Food in a Changing World" currently on display at the United States Botanic Garden. In partnership with the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL), attendees will be able to browse Black History Month titles, sign up for library cards, and check out books.
Registration for the Black Growers Conference is free and open now by visiting DPR.events.
