DPR Hosts Pickleball Summit to Engage Residents on Growing Sport
Residents are invited to provide feedback; engage with partners; learn about pickleball at DPR and beyond; and play some pickleball
(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will host a Pickleball Summit at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center and Courts, 1100 Michigan Avenue, NE, from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.
“As the popularity of pickleball has grown, DPR’s investment in the game has grown as well,” said Acting DPR Director Thennie Freeman. “We are excited to host this summit and provide a venue to talk about our work, receive feedback, and forge new connections that extend beyond the lines of the pickleball court.”
DPR currently has 58 dedicated or blended outdoor pickleball courts at 17 locations throughout the District, along with 30 indoor courts at 12 locations. DPR offers pickleball programs at 19 locations (indoor & outdoor), registering over 1,500 people for pickleball programs in FY23, two-thirds of whom are female. In addition, Mayor Muriel Bowser’s FY24 budget includes $750,000 for repurposing four existing, underutilized courts for use as pickleball courts.

During the Summit, DPR and Acting Director Freeman will highlight pickleball programs, future plans, and resources through an interactive presentation. Pickleball partner organizations and businesses will be on-site to add to the discussion. DPR Pickleball and Capital Projects staff will hold Q&A session for residents. The event will conclude with the chance to play pickleball and/or learn from a DPR instructor.
