(Washington, DC) This January, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is filled with opportunities for fun! Review the list of highlighted events below, and remember this is only a glimpse of the many activities and programs you can find at DPR throughout January. Throughout the year the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) offers an exciting variety of programs, classes, and special events. Listed below are just some of the many activities offered this month by DPR. For more information on these or other events, visit any DPR center.

ATHLETIC PROGRAMS

2011 Men's Winter Futsal League
Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, 1100 Michigan Avenue, NE
Time: 3pm – 8pm/9pm (Every Saturday)
Ages: 18 and up
Men's Winter Futsal League; 5 vs. 5, 40 -minute games, two halves, two refs and one timekeeper

Prince George's Sportsplex All Comers Track Meet
Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex, 8001 Sheriff Road, Landover, MD.
Time: 8am – 6pm
All Ages
Track & field meet held for athletes of all ages to compete in running and field events in their respective age groups. DC Speed uses these meets as competitions for our youth to gain some experience in the sport of track and field.
Fees: $3/Spectators (8&under); - $4 Athletes 14 & Under (maximum of 3 events); $5 High School athletes (maximum of 4 events); $6 All other athletes (maximum of 4 events). For more information, call Edgar Sams at (202) 671-0314.

DPR Girls Softball Clinic (Wards 1 & 2)
Columbia Heights Recreation Center, 1480 Girard Place, NW
Time: 9:00AM – 4PM (8:30 Registration)
Ages 6-13
The Athletic Programs Administration and DPR staff will hold its first in a series of four softball clinics for girls ages 6-13. This first clinic at Columbia Heights Community Center will be for girls in Wards 1 & 2. Three additional clinics will be held at Riggs-LaSalle, Turkey Thicket, and Deanwood Recreation Centers for girls in the remaining wards. Information on future clinics will follow. The purpose of this clinic is to generate interest and excitement for the upcoming D.C. City-Wide Softball League. The morning will be focused on instruction and skill development followed by an afternoon movie and a skills competition to close out the clinic. PVTC All-Comers Track Meet
Jefferson Community Center (Indoor Track), 3501 South 2nd St., Arlington, VA
Time: 7:45am – 12pm
All Ages
This is a track meet held for all ages, and DC Speed uses it as a practice meet for our youth. Individuals compete in running events while they’re are some field event clinics being held as well. Event is free for athletes up to 8th grade; $3/high school athletes

"I Have A Dream" In-House Tennis Tournament
Southeast Tennis & Learning Center, 701 Mississippi Avenue, SE

Ages: 6 – 17
Southeast Tennis and Learning Center will be having its "I Have A Dream" In-House Tennis Tournament. This tournament allows the youth who have been enrolled in the program to compete. For those on the beginner level it is considered an introduction. For those a little more skilled it serves as a challenge ladder for their respective courts. MLK Black History Scavenger Hunt

Participants will look for clues at various museums on the National Mall; the clues will cover US History, Black History, Black inventors, and Geography. MLK Holiday of Service 2011
Ft. Davis Recreation Center, 1400 41st Street, SE
Time: 9:30am - 1:30pm

Ft. Davis Recreation Center is one of four host sites for Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday of Service 2011. Participants will assist with painting, light maintenance, and cleaning of the facility. Volunteers must register in advance to be counted as one of the 125 free slots in Ward 7. Registration includes a t-shirt and snack. The deadline for volunteers to register is January 6th. Volunteers can register for the event the following ways:

  1. Online Registration- Volunteers can use the links below to sign-up for the project of their choice. This is the fastest and easiest way to confirm their volunteer spot.
  2. Site Registration – Stop by Ft. Davis Recreation Center and fill out registration form.
