DPR Will Operate Six Extended Hours Cooling Shelters in Response to the District's Severe Heat Emergency

(Washington, DC) Due to last night's severe thunderstorm, the expected high temperatures for the remainder of the weekend and the District's declared state of emergency - DPR announced extended pool hours at select locations earlier this week.  DPR has just announced that it will also operate 6 facilities as cooling shelters until 8 pm on Sunday, July 1st - in response to the Districts weekend heat wave and power outages.  "We commend the residents of the District of Columbia for allowing crews to get out there this morning as they worked diligently to restore power and clean up debris from downed trees," said DPR Director Jesús Aguirre.  "DPR was prepared for the heat wave by extending hours of pools for the weekend, and in response to last nights storm, and to be pro-active in the event of additional storms over the weekend, we are working with HSEMA to operate 6 cooling shelters for District residents."

Please note that the following recreation and community centers remain closed due to power outages: Ward 3 - Hardy and Stoddert; Ward 4 - Riggs LaSalle; Ward 5 - Arboretum and Turkey Thicket;  Ward 7 - Deanwood, Fort Davis, Benning Stoddert and Hillcrest; Ward 8 - Douglass and Bald Eagle..

Due to the continued extreme heat conditions, all DPR fields are closed/off-line.  All DPR events and all permitted events on DPR fields are cancelled for the day.

DPR will send out updates as necessary.
