DPR's Tennis Program to Receive One USTA/MidAtlantic & Five USTA/DC Awards for Tennis Excellence

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced DPR's Tennis program will receive awards and accolades from the US Tennis Association's (USTA) Mid-Atlantic region chapter and DC local chapter.

DPR will receive the following awards:
  • USTA/MidAtlantic Tennis Organization of the Year: DPR
  • USTA/DC Tennis Organization of the Year: DPR
  • USTA/DC Coach of the Year: Coach Malcolm Greene
  • USTA/DC Excellence Award: Coach Enoch Thompson
  • USTA/DC Best Tennis Tournament Series Award: DPR/Coach Malcolm Greene
  • USTA/DC President's Award: Southeast Tennis and Learning Center (SETLC)


The USTA/Mid-Atlantic chapter has selected DPR to receive the 2014 Tennis Organization of the Year award.  DPR is considered a valued partner of the USTA/Mid-Atlantic, as the agency continues to help to grow the sport of tennis and support USTA programs.  DPR will receive the award at the USTA/MAS Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon on November 22, 2014 at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, VA.  The USTA/Mid-Atlantic region is comprised of members, clubs, organizations and teams in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.


The USTA/DC chapter has selected DPR to receive the 2014 Tennis Organization of the Year award, DPR Coach Malcolm Greene shall receive the 2014 Coach of the Year award, DPR Coach Enoch Thompson shall receive the 2014 Excellence Award, DPR shall recieve the Best Tennis Tournament Series Award and the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center shall receive the 2014 President's Award at the USTA/DC Awards Luncheon on November 15, 2014 at the Kellogg Conference Hotel on the campus of Galludet University.

 

DPR's Tennis program falls under the Sports division and DPR's Manager of Tennis, Jeri Ingram, oversees all tennis programming for the agency by promoting a robust, citywide tennis program for all District of Columbia residents to enjoy.  With over 140 tennis courts currently in DPR's inventory, District residents can participate in structured tennis programming or reserve a court for "free-play".

In 2014, DPR's Tennis program:

  • added blended court lines,
  • created the wildly successful late night "Tennis Under the Lights" program at Fort Lincoln tennis courts,
  • continued to host the annual Stars of Tomorrow 3-day youth tournament at the CitiOpen tennis tournament,
  • participated in Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the US Open,
  • hosted the USTA/National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) Regional Coaches Training with over 50 coaches from the mid-atlantic region,
  • continued to host citywide "Tennis Play Days" for youth,
  • offered over 30 tennis summer camps for youth,
  • created an adult tennis league,
  • hosted over 10 citywide and regional tennis tournaments,
  • and continued to offer the well-attended and ever popular Spring, Summer and Fall citywide tennis programs for Adults (19 yrs. & over), Juniors (7–18 yrs.) and Tiny Tots (3–6 yrs.) at the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels.

DPR also recently cut the ribbon on the renovated Southeast Tennis and Learning Center on Friday, November 7 with Mayor Vincent C. Gray; tennis phenom's Venus and Serena Williams; and Recreation Wish List Committee Founder & CEO, Cora Masters Barry.  Renovations at the SETLC include a new 48,000 square foot indoor arena, six indoor tennis courts, a mezzanine spectator level,  new USTA tournament quality outdoor courts with a practice clay court and more.
